Preserving Local History

The Hardwick Historical Society was incorporated in 1961 in Hardwick, Massachusetts.

Its purpose is to collect, hold, preserve and exhibit items of historical value and interest, engage in and support study, educate the community, and establish a suitable place for meetings and exhibits.

The Historical Society collections include: a Revolutionary War document signed by the town’s Minutemen, a finely crafted, fully-furnished antique dollhouse, a large assortment of Sandwich glass, beautiful vintage garments, and the war chest of Brigadier General Timothy Ruggles, one of Hardwick’s most illustrious citizens before the Revolutionary War.

Emily Mary (Fila) Bancroft

August 24, 1946 - October 9, 2024 (age 78)

With a heavy heart we announce the passing of Emily Bancroft.

The Trustees of the Hardwick Historical Society and its members will greatly miss Emily. She had exceptional knowledge of the history of Hardwick and a strong willingness to share that knowledge with others. She and her late husband, Russell Bancroft had been Trustees of the Hardwick Historical Society for over twenty-five years! Russell Bancroft had been our longtime Treasurer and Emily was our talented Curator. Their combined work was invaluable to Hardwick Historical Society in many ways. We are, indeed, indebted to them for their many insightful and unselfish contributions.

We will remember Emily as a friend, a coworker, and a talented historian.

Volunteers are always welcome to help us with our efforts.

We welcome your help in preserving our artifacts, documenting our collection, writing grants, researching the values of items we own, teaching or providing programs to local schools, and working with our computers.
